WHAT NOT TO DO

Mom's birthday cake - I imagined zigzag effects of drizzled chocolate but the outcome? a frenzy of sloppy blobs & inartistic swirls

Recipes, anyone? Here' what NOT to do.

1. Do not procrastinate. Any baking attempts should be planned at least 2 days ahead. Last minute preparation & midnight sweating it out over the oven spell disaster in progress.

2. Do not buy instant cake mix 'cap Burung Unta'. Get Pillsbury or Betty Crocker if you are that desperate. The absence of a weighing machine and a proper sieve is not a valid excuse for sheer laziness.

3. Do not whip the cream more than the time stipulated unless you're going for the curdled look for the cake. Do not blame your child if you are distracted. Do put your screaming/helpful toddler in her highchair/playpen/cage or occupy her time with TV/books/etc. Do have spare whipping cream in the fridge.

4. Do not purchase cheap & pathetic looking cake decorating set. Try not to visualize that you will achieve the icing-piping expertise of a pastry chef just by reading the manual, more so if it is written mainly in Chinese. Note that you will not achieve the desired design if you've never held a conventional piping bag either.

5. Do not decorate the cake on the plate you're planning to serve. The chocolate & whatnot will drip and make an unsightly mess. Unless you have the tongue of a cat's, then maybe you don't have to change plates once you are done. A better option is to line the plate with grease paper.

6. Do not wear white when you're baking a chocolate cake. Otherwise, be extra cautious when you are licking chocolate & cake batter off your fingers & the utensils.

7. Do not bake this cake for your mother. She can bake a helluva better cake than this. But if you do, she'll love it anyway and lie to your face that it tastes heavenly.

Someone please say this cake looks yummy, thank you.

The shiny coat of melted chocolate is making me drool!

Sedap tak sedap, dah score points dgn mak dah. ;)

dyanna, kenalah byk pantang larangnya, sebab itu kek tak jadi! i wanted to order a cake actually, but once in a while i need the validation tht I'm hopeless in the kitchen.

Moby, dont let picasa'ed cake photo fool you. It really is terrible. Cap 'ostritch'. Seriously, wht was I thinking?

Heriati, the only part edible is the topping my dear. That saved the cake. The little ones practically scraped off the chocolate top and the cake underneath was left untouched!

Either you guys are so generous with the compliments or the "full face make-up" on the cake pic really did the trick!

A for effort and A for being truthful.

Aunty Anne, this sounds like the story of Five little monkeys baking a birthday cake with disastrous result offcourse. But at least in your case no accidents happen and no fireman came to the rescue :) Your cakes looks good actually

Kek atas tu sebenarnya kek ke apa? Hehehhe, jangan marah! Tapi gambar kek yang bawak tu memang nampak sedap.. Tapi, ada pantang larang ke buat kek nie? So far ucue buat tak de pantang apa pun? Sambil buat assignment lagi.

practice makes perfect. I bet there will be another episode of baking with a more sumptuous looking cake.

I pun dah meninggalkan zaman membuat kek. Takut nak tengok apa jadi, if i made one.

pinkyj, looks good eh? abih tertipu sumer orang. Really, cap burung unta. Tak bedek, lol!

mamasarah, when it comes to cooking, i cannot lie!

alya, hehe u don't know but i'm prone to smoking my kitchen! I;m just lucky these cakes didn't get burnt, but a lil undercooked! haiyayai!

ucue, yg atas tu choc cake with whipped cream topping, decorate ngan melted chocolate. Utk orang2 seperti saya (bukan cam ucue yg talented sambil buat assigment pun bleh buat cake!) pantang larang ini adalah amat perlu sebagai pengajaran di masa hadapan.

cady, *hugs* everything i cook looks good to you, huh? hehe your mom has a discerning palate kott.. dont take it personal.

dyanna, i'm afraid it'll be just a phase. Mana tau lepas ni teringin nak buat cupcake pulak? Yikes, I predict major disaster!

cik berry, errr.. thanks!
