Oreo Cheesecake recipe courtesy of Mama Sarah. I found myself thinking about Mama Sarah scrummy looking cake for days.
Again I think I was possessed by the spirit of Nigella and thought of the craziest thing.
Bake a cheese cake for Mama & Abah who was coming to visit. And I had only 15 minutes!
I was afraid Mama was gonna shoot down my effort. She is in fact, the Doctor who bakes the meanest, healthiest cheese cake on the block, who insists she'll sell them at RM120 per cake, considering she earns RM 100/hour.
Some (like Mama) may think that I'm an idiot for making a cheese cake without proper equipment; i.e food processor / electric mixer. I crushed the oreo's with my dry blender & the remaining bits with my knuckles. I mixed the cheese, vanilla & eggs with a humble egg beater.
I thought, hey, they didn't have electrical appliances a 100 yrs ago and I'm sure I can manage that. I don't care if it turns out horrible, I just wanna get it over with and wipe Mama Sarah's cake image from my mind.
Turned out fine, according to everyone. Tok raved about it non-stop (well she 'loves' every dish that I make for her anyway). OK maybe the crust crumbled a bit because I wasn't patient enuff when stirring in the butter, and the chopped oreos in the cheese filling and those sprinkled on top was extra chunky that everyone had black bits stuck in their teeth. Good thing I skip the sugar altogether, or Mama would chide me for forcing her & Martian take their diabetic pills.
Because I cheated on the ingredients and used only a packet (Mama assured ONE is enough) of cheese instead of FOUR (alahai Mama Sarah, cheese mahal gila kat Malaysia, tau) from the original recipe, the filling didn't quite taste cheesy enough. Then Momma pointed out that she cheats by adding some lemon juice or sour cream. Thaaaaattt explains why her cheese cake always tastes lighter and not too rich like the regular ones in the pastry shop.
OK, lesson learnt.
But I'm sure from the looks of everyone's happy faces, my maiden cheese cake attempt is not too bad after all.

Anne, when your blog loaded on my browser and I saw the first picture, my initial reaction was "Oh my god! What the .... ". Then I saw the second picture.
It actually looks quite yummy. Yeah, like Mama Sarah says, I'll ask you to make one for us if we're in Penang. Hehe! :D

to be honest, i was shocked seeing the first picture too (like moby), i thought you burnt something again with all the black stuff on top of the cake, haha :D
