MORBID TALK

Ever since Nunu's been exposed to concept of death with the passing of two members in our family, we've had a few interesting conversation about it. Like most first time moms trying to get into their kids heads, I asked her what she thinks if I 'pass away' (the term we're using for death/dead/mati - politically correct or not?)

She said, no I cannot die. I explained to her that everybody will die sooner or later, the matter is when and how. It appeared like a depressing issue, but I could see in her eyes something was going on in her pretty little head.

"OK, you can pass away, but Nuha 'korek tanah' and 'baca doa' for Momma."

I was dumbfounded by her answer, but it was totally innocent! We got into even more serious discussion, but ultimately got silly and fooled around with some cheap plastic water guns and played dead.

We hardly have newspapers around the house, and the channels are perpetually rotating between Playhouse Disney, Nickelodeon and Starworld. So when I have the chance to read some Kosmo at MIL's, I usually pore over a week's worth of news.

I was engrossed with what was happening in Gaza when Nunu came whizzing by with a plastic bike and screeched to a halt. "Ma, ape tu?!" she asked pointing at some disturbing photos. So I told her that their homes were bombed by some bad people and some kids 'passed away'. As I was getting into the concept of wars, terrorism and suffering, I saw that she couldn't tear her eyes off the images of the slain children, fingering and tracing the blood on their small bodies. Very quiet. So I kept quiet too.

And each time she sees me with a newspaper, she'd ask to see those photos again.

Moms out there, have you done this before? I've talked to several people and they say their moms have done this to them at least once.

I have just finished Maghrib prayers, but I kept my telekung on so that I can wait for Isya'. Thinking that I can get a quick shut eye, I climbed on the bed and rested. Nunu came inside the room and saw me on the bed, lying very stiff and tried to wake me up. An evil thought sprung, a little prank took over my mind, and I purposely kept still until she panicked and howled and kissed my face all over and promised to be a good girl if I didn't 'pass away'.

Bless that child, but when she misbehaves, I'll remind her of that promise.

clever girl, your nunu. blum ada chance lagi nak discuss about death with the kids. Probably I'll do what you did. but definitely not a plesant subject to talk about.

GULP. it's a depressing subject on its own, without having to explain it to a toddler. i don't know what i'll do if i was in the same situation.

but good deal jugak kan, she promises to be good hehehe.

My mom always play dead with us too when we were younger. I think it's a good way to play with the kids while having a downtime.. haha..

dyanna, when you have a child of your own nanti, i'm sure you'll get the urge to do the same :)

jo, the opportunity would come later. to us it came quite naturally, but i'm glad it went well, and she doesn't seem traumatized. i think :)
