GLOBAL BREASTFEEDING WAVE 2007

*Warning: pictures galore ahead. Hey, haven't this raggedyanne heard of flickr ke, fotopages ke, multiply ke? Semak ah blog dia!*

Scepticism, sluggishness, and seriously mad morning traffic aside, I attended the said GBW 2007 in Penang just in time for the welcoming speech given by Susan Siew, the co-director of WABA.

Didn't have an inkling where the heck Penang Caring Society Complex was, but thank goodness there was Charantya, a fellow SI member whom I got to know through the forum and readily agreed to let me follow her car as we drove through the crazy labyrinth of Penang Road's back alleys & dubious shortcuts.

Look at the crowd turn out, not bad huh?

So, the main objective if this event is to monitor the GBW which was to start at 10 am sharp. New Zealand has started earlier at their 10 am time, and the wave was passed to the next participating country of the following time zone (I *think* that was the idea lah)

Being among these mommies, I immediately got worked up and all my questionable stance flew out of the window. Out of the blue, I was excited to be part of history and the world record (or as Hana commented, a number on the statistics, or a blip on the graph)

But in true Nunu-style, as soon as we reached the hall, Nunu (who showed exemplary behavior through out the 1 hour plus journey) immediately switched gears and went out of control. She wouldn't stay put, but roamed around instead without once paying me any attention while I chased after her. She chatted up with strangers, stroked and patted babies, rummaged through the stuffs set up at booths, etc.

Once, she climbed up the stage during a Q&A session and pranced around as if it was a fashion show. And she did a mighty poo before we left the event, but wouldn't let me get her washed up and thought we were playing tag. When I did finally get her clean at the ladies toilet, she had her diaper changed on the stage again (w/o spectators of course, they were all at lunch!)

One word: CHALLENGING!

When she saw babies crawling around, she wanted to crawl too!

And she had the cheek to show & offer people her smelly elephant!

This is little Arthur, son of a really youthful looking SI member, JC.

Charantya's sweet baby girl, Anis. Look at that full head of hair, and look at Nunu's err.. sparse wisp!

When they started the countdown, I swooped down on Nunu and offered her to nen-nen (something that she never said no to, ever!), but she was acting antsy due to, I guess , excitement, what else. One really sweet nurse with soft dulcet Sabahan accent tried to help by gently coaxing Nunu and patting her head, but she just refused to latch on and squirmed about until I relented and gave up.

I didn't get her to nurse for 1 full minute. Heck, I didn't even get to latch on for barely 3 seconds! She was oblivious of that significant moment and was happily climbing atop banquet chairs.

I could only sigh in disappointment, unable to believe that of all the days, of all the time, Nunu chose NOT to nurse at that one moment, one minute, 60 seconds. You made us disqualified, Nunu! We came from so far, and so early, and so... full of hope and determination to support the event. But we didn't count. We were mere spectators.

Seriously, what does it have to take? Do I have to lie down on the floor and expose myself, the way you always like, Nunu? I'm sure she would pounce on me without thinking twice (haha sounds so perverted hor)

Anyway, the lovely nurse was apologetic, but sensitive enough to console me that we are still technically WABA's valued participants, and we'll get our certificates even though we were disqualified.

After the validated count, 60 mommies successfully completed the 1 minute synchronized breastfeeding. Wohoooo!! That's a quite an impressive number. I believed in SI Lactation Support Center in Bangi, the number is 17, and 23 more in Putrajaya. I believe there were more participants in several more locations such as GHKL and Pantai Medical Center, but the numbers are unknown. Hopefully, after all the numbers are tallied, there will be an official announcement about the world record they were talking about.

Lynie, Kak Novia, Oya & Charantya (all name have been changed to protect the identities of mommies :)

It was nice having a mini gathering with fellow SI members, getting to know each other and discussing parenting tips and breastfeeding experiences. Somewhat felt like I was in that "Surviving Motherhood" show on DH&H, sans the comfy couch of course. They all managed to 'dump' their babies at the taska before heading to Queensbay, while I was the only one having to manage an energizer duracell bunny.

All in all, it was a lovely and eye-opening experience. And although I was declared disqualified, there's no regret and I wouldn't exchange the experience for anything in the whole wide world.
